In principiu, toate camerele digitale creaza inerent imperfectiuni nedorite cunoscute ca zgomot de imagine. Cantitatea sau tipul zgomotului intr-o imagine depinde de calitatea si tipul senzorului de imagine cu care a fost capturata.
Zgomotul de contrast (de luminanta) sau cel de culoare (de crominanta) poate fi prezent individual intr-o imagine sau poate fi vazut in aceeasi imagine. ISO-ul rapid sau inalt si nivelele de lumina scazuta poate crea zgomot in imagine, in timp ce cateva imagini ar putea expune nivele inalte de artefacte JPEG.
